Could you share a bit about yourself and how long you have been with A&B Labs?
I joined A&B Labs ten years ago as a microbiologist, bringing with me a strong academic and industry background. Prior to coming to the United States and pursuing my master’s degree, I worked in India as a Quality Control Engineer for a pharmaceutical company. In that role, I performed analytical testing using LC-MS, which sparked my initial interest in analytical chemistry and laid a strong technical foundation for my career.
I later earned my master’s degree in Molecular Biotechnology and went on to work as both a research and teaching assistant for bioinformatics and molecular techniques courses. During this time, I taught undergraduate laboratory courses focused on microbiology and molecular techniques, further strengthening my expertise in the field. As a research assistant, I also worked extensively with LC-MS/MS TOF instrumentation, deepening my analytical skill set and reinforcing my interest in advanced laboratory techniques.
This combination of academic training and hands-on analytical experience led to my first industry role as an analytical chemist, where I conducted semi-volatile and TPH analyses. While that experience broadened my technical scope, I ultimately transitioned back into microbiology, which has always been my primary area of study and professional focus. Since joining A&B Labs initially as a microbiologist, I have continued to grow within the organization, progressing into roles including Laboratory Manager and, most recently, Technical Director, allowing me to contribute both operationally and strategically.
Can you walk us through a typical day or week in your role as an Operations lead?
No two days are ever the same, which is one of the most engaging aspects of my role. As Technical Director for Microbiology, I lead the scientific oversight behind our testing programs, ensuring that every result we release is accurate, compliant, and legally defensible. My responsibilities include overseeing microbiology operations from method selection and daily quality control review to troubleshooting complex technical issues.
I also play a key role in ensuring ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements, supporting audits, and maintaining a strong quality culture across the laboratory. In addition, I focus heavily on training and mentoring the team, working closely with Quality and Operations to continuously improve processes, strengthen efficiencies, and ensure we remain audit-ready at all times.
In your opinion, what sets A&B Labs / AmSpec apart from other companies in the TIC (Testing, Inspection, and Certification) industry?
What truly sets A&B Labs / AmSpec apart is our ability to deliver a broad range of environmental and microbiology testing while maintaining deep technical specialization. With ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and TCEQ approval, we combine rigorous quality standards with the expertise needed to support complex regulatory and client requirements.
Equally important is our responsiveness and flexibility. From fast and adaptable turnaround times to Saturday sample receiving, we are structured to meet real-world client needs. Our local Houston roots also allow us to maintain a personal, collaborative approach rather than a purely corporate one. As a Technical Director, I value how this environment allows us to focus on producing legally defensible data that clients genuinely rely on, not simply checking boxes.
Reflecting on your career path, which skills have been the most critical to your success in this role?
Reflecting on my progression from microbiologist to Laboratory Manager and now Technical Director, three core competencies have been critical to my success. The first is a strong command of regulatory standards and analytical methodologies, including TNI requirements and EPA methods, which enables me to effectively troubleshoot complex results, respond to audit findings, and uphold the integrity of our data.
The second is quality systems leadership—developing and sustaining systems that move beyond baseline compliance to enhance operational efficiency, consistency, and long-term performance. Lastly, clear communication and intentional mentorship have been essential. By fostering a culture where analysts are encouraged to think as technical leaders rather than solely as technicians, we have been as a team, able to consistently deliver legally defensible data while supporting the continued growth and strength of the organization.
Can you describe your team in Houston?
Our Houston microbiology team is a highly dedicated group of certified analysts and degreed microbiologists who support a wide range of testing, from routine coliform analysis to Legionella and pathogen testing, including Salmonella. All work is performed in strict accordance with approved standard methods and TNI protocols.
What truly sets this team apart is their technical versatility and problem-solving mindset. They are not simply running tests; they are actively helping clients navigate complex challenges by delivering accurate, defensible data under tight turnaround times. I am especially proud of how they consistently balance high-volume production with uncompromising quality standards, while also responding to on-demand projects and emergency situations. Whether supporting a time-sensitive water analysis or an urgent Legionella investigation, the team works diligently to ensure clients meet critical deadlines.
